As you should be aware by now, there are many places to experience the vast mysteries of the universe, to stand in awe before the questions that have no answers, to be dang ol’ gobsmacked at how mysteriously mysterious mystery can be. There is the mystery of Confusion Hill in Californy. There is the mysterious car movements of Mystery Hill in Maryland. And then there is The Thing: Mystery of the Desert.
Not to be outdone (though truth be told, Louisiana is one big voodooy, mysterious state) there is the Abita Mystery House in Abita Springs, LA. If you’re in N’awlins, it’s a drive across the Pontchartrain causeway. As per usual with mystery places such as this one, there are a LOT of signs. I’m guessing because the mystery is so great, you need constant reminders that there is mystery going on all around you.
Now, because this is Louisiana, you would think any mystery house worth its weight in the unknowable would have mysterious stuffed animals because there are all kinds of weird critters roaming the swamps and the bayous. True to form, AMH is full of nature’s oddities.
Part gator, part human and fabulously dressed. But how?! It’s a mystery, cuz you just don’t want to think about it.
Darryl the Dogigator. Part gator, part duck. How do a gator and a duck copulate? It’s a mystery. I imagine the duck didn’t survive the afterglow.
And then there’s the skull head fish. Yeah, it’s a mystery too. Besides mysterious creatures you will also find a lot of stuff at the AMH. Think about how much stuff you can stuff into a small house and then triple it. The mystery is how the house is still standing.
There are quite a few of these dioramas complete with moving parts. In this one, you push the button below and the tornado whirls around.
And just when you think there can be no answer to the mystery…
